What is Shared Reading?
A Reader Guide reads a story (novel, short story or poem) aloud to a small group. No prep, no homework, no literary degree required — just come, and be.
The Reader Guide pauses as the story unfolds, and people have space to wonder, talk, or just listen.
Groups are small — usually under 12 — and meet weekly in a relaxed, safe space.
A typical session:
● 60–90 mins
● One short story and a poem, read aloud
● Chats about whatever's coming up
● Tea, cake, coffee, whatever's going
Shared Stories is based on Shared Reading, developed by The Reader Organisation in the UK over 25 years ago. It now runs in 700+ weekly groups across the UK — including libraries, hospitals and prisons — and has spread to Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Shared Reading NSW runs in the Blue Mountains, with groups in Melbourne too.
